Engagement Session by Kalamalka Lake | Vernon Wedding Photographer
Engagement Photography in Vernon
I was super happy to do an engagement session with Christine and Matthew. Christine was the Maid of Honor at her sister, Monica’s wedding. Enjoy how beautiful Monica is in this photo. I was immediately captivated by Chistine’s beautiful hair, but her eyes were even more alluring. I learned that she wasn’t yet married, but had a boyfriend. Odd as it may seem, it was always in the back of my mind during the day, that I hoped that lucky guy would propose, and that they would ask me to be their wedding photographer. Well… dreams do come true.
Kalamalka Lake Park
Kalamalka Lake park is one of my favorite locations for outdoor photos. It’s best later on in the day when the light is low. The lake is known for its brilliant emerald hue, and makes for a spectacular backdrop.
The only problem with scheduling a photo session later in the day, when the light is best, is that it happens to be when the park closes. At least the parking lot gate is locked. If you parked your car in the lot and are wrapped up in the glory of a super awesome photo session, your car could very easily be locked in for the night. My suggestion then, is to find parking outside the gate and plan to do some walking.
Fortunately I had the benefit of meeting Christine before, so we already had that comfort of familiarity. However, this was the first time I met Matt, (he wasn’t at Monica’s wedding) so the twenty minutes we spent walking through the park was a great opportunity to get to know him.
Even though I had a specific location in mind, I didn’t want to get there and be like – “Okay let’s start.” That approach always seems to put people on the spot, like they are being asked to perform. Instead, I had my camera around my neck as we walked, and casually snapped a photo here and there. If I saw something I liked, I just asked them to do it again. This put Matthew at ease, or at the very least, he never felt as though he was the actual focus of any one particular image.
Why I Love This Image:
After about half an hour of talking, walking and snapping random pictures, these two got into a groove of their own. Matthew became comfortable enough to actually think less about me, and more about being with Christine. They started playing, having fun. At times Matthew actually brought the mood down to a more romantic level. It was during one of these moments when I caught this image. Of course, neither of them could keep that feeling for very long, before the giggling started up again. Of course those moment s are just as great, and yes, I keep shooting through the whole exchange.

In all, we probably spent a good three hours together. I got to know Matthew and he is easily someone with whom I would enjoy going for a beer. If the images are any sort of representation, I’m sure they are comfortable being in front of my camera. You can see many more images from their engagement session here.
